Dungeon Crawler Carl

The History and The Story

In 2020, the author Matt Dinniman self-published a book called Dungeon Crawler Carl. He released it in paperback and on Kindle. He released the next four books in less than two years from when the first one came out. In 2024, after the sixth book came out, Ace Books picked up the print rights and released hardcover versions of the books with new cover art. Dinniman included parts of a short story set within the same universe at the end of these hardcover copies, called Backstage at the Pineapple Cabaret. There is a normal audiobook available on Audible, as well as a full audio production done by Soundbooth Theater. In addition to those, there is a webcomic currently being created, as well as a graphic novel that follows a different character.

The story follows Carl and Princess Donut, who is a sapient award-winning show cat. When Earth is overtaken by aliens, they are given an option to compete in Dungeon Crawler World, which is a game show for other aliens in the universe. There are distinct levels to the dungeon, and each book covers one to two levels. While on the surface, it would seem like a book that has no real meaning, but as Carl and Donut progress through the dungeon, they form very real and heartwarming relationships with other competitors. Dinniman is excellent at blending humor and violence, while also being able to tug at his readers heartstrings.
